Brooklyn Stair Railings repairs, re-welds, and restores loose, rusted, and damaged metal railings across the borough's brownstones and row houses. A railing that wobbles, has rusted through at the base, or has lost pickets is both unsafe and often salvageable rather than a full replacement. We assess the railing on site, cut out and re-weld the failed sections, re-anchor loose posts into sound masonry, and refinish the metal to stop the rust. The most common failure we see is rust eating a railing at the base, where the posts meet the stoop and water collects. Once the metal is compromised there, the railing loosens and the section has to be cut out and rebuilt rather than patched over with filler. We cut back to sound metal, fabricate matching replacement sections, and weld them in so the repair is as strong as the original, then grind the welds smooth. A stoop railing that rocks when you push on it has usually lost its anchoring, either because the mortar it was set in has failed or because rust has jacked the post loose. Surface-patching the base never lasts. We core-drill into sound stone or the cheek wall, reset the posts in anchoring cement, and tie the railing back to solid structure so it stands rigid again. On an interior stair we re-secure loose newel posts and wall brackets into framing or blocking. Re-anchoring is often what a wobbly railing actually needs, and it is far cheaper than a full replacement.
Many original Brooklyn railings are worth restoring rather than replacing, especially on historic and landmarked blocks. We strip the flaking old paint and rust, treat the metal, and refinish it with a primer and enamel or a baked powder coat so it is protected for years. Where the original spacing is dangerously wide by modern standards, we can discreetly add balusters to meet the 4-inch rule while keeping the historic look. Saving and refinishing an original railing preserves the character of the house and the streetscape in a way a new rail cannot.
