A cable railing replaces vertical balusters with horizontal runs of stainless steel wire held under high tension between a welded top rail and posts. The engineering that keeps a cable railing safe lives in the posts and the spacing. Posts have to be stout and closely set so the cables can be tensioned hard without bowing the frame, and intermediate spacers are added on longer runs to stop the wires from spreading when someone leans or pushes on them. That deflection limit is how a horizontal-cable system satisfies the intent of the 4-inch gap rule even though the infill runs sideways. We size and weld the posts, specify the cable and fittings, and set the tension so the finished railing meets the roughly 42-inch guard height and stays taut for years without needing constant retensioning.
Cable railings almost always use stainless steel because the cable and its fittings are thin and cannot afford to lose any section to rust. For a roof deck or a waterfront balcony in Bay Ridge or along the Brooklyn waterfront, we specify 316 stainless, which resists the chloride corrosion that salt air drives. Indoors and in protected locations, 304 stainless is often sufficient. Matching the grade to the exposure keeps the cables bright and the fittings sound rather than staining and seizing after a couple of coastal winters.
