Brooklyn Stair Railings fabricates and installs graspable metal handrails for stairs, hallways, and entries where a full guardrail is not needed. A handrail is what your hand actually holds, so its height, diameter, and anchoring have to be right to be both safe and code-compliant. We field-measure the run, fabricate the rail and its brackets in our shop, and mount it solidly into studs, blocking, or masonry. The result is a continuous, firmly anchored handrail that gives real support along every step.
A wall-mounted handrail is the simplest way to make a staircase safe where there is already a wall on one side. We fabricate the rail from steel or stainless, form the returns at each end so nothing snags a sleeve, and mount it on brackets set at the 34 to 38 inch graspable height. The critical detail is what the brackets bite into: we anchor into wall studs or into solid blocking, and into masonry where the stair runs against a brick or stone wall, so the rail cannot pull loose under a hard grab. A handrail that flexes or wobbles is worse than none, so the anchoring gets the same attention as the fabrication.
Where there is no wall, we build a freestanding handrail carried on its own welded posts. A short stoop, a single step at an entry, or a stair open on one side all call for a post-mounted rail, and each post is core-drilled and anchored into the tread or slab so the rail stands rigid. We fabricate the assembly to follow the pitch of the steps and grind the welds smooth so the finished rail is clean to the hand. These small custom rails are exactly the kind of job that off-the-shelf hardware never fits, which is why field measurement and shop fabrication make the difference.
For a handrail to count, it has to be graspable, which means a profile a hand can actually close around rather than a wide flat bar. We fabricate rails in a round or shaped section sized to be gripped, run them continuously along the flight, and set them in the 34 to 38 inch height range measured from the stair nosing. Where the handrail also serves as the top of a guardrail on an open stair, we build it to the roughly 42-inch guard height with compliant infill below. Getting the profile and height right is what makes the rail both comfortable and inspection-ready.
